A distinguished alumnus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Mr. Leslie Nkansa Osei-Bonsu, has been nominated as the new Mamponghene, succeeding the late Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who passed away in April 2025 at the age of 86.
The 51-year-old software engineer was introduced on Monday by the Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyakoma Difie II, as the royal family’s choice to ascend the revered Silver Stool, a position that makes him the second-in-command in Asanteman and caretaker of the kingdom in the absence of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
His nomination awaits the approval of the Asantehene before formal installation.
He graduated from KNUST with a First-Class Honours degree in Geomatic Engineering, later serving as President of the KNUST Alumni Association (KNUST Chapter).
In that role, he spearheaded alumni engagement initiatives, reunions, and mentorship programmes for students, efforts that strengthened the bond between the university and its graduates.
Mr. Osei-Bonsu, a royal of the Asante Mampong Botaase Royal Family, was born on March 14, 1974, in Kumasi.
He began his education at City of Kumasi Preparatory School and continued to Prempeh College, where his leadership qualities emerged early as he served as Assistant School Prefect.
Mr. Osei-Bonsu furthered his studies abroad, earning a Master of Science in Geo-Information Science and Earth Observation (Distinction) from the University of Twente (ITC), Netherlands, and another Master of Science in Computational Science and Engineering from the Technical University of Munich, Germany.
Professionally, he is a senior software architect and geospatial systems strategist with over two decades of experience leading complex software initiatives across Europe and Africa.
He currently serves as Product and Service Group Manager at GAF AG in Germany, where he oversees multidisciplinary teams developing ISO-compliant software solutions for spatial analysis, agricultural decision support, and secure identity management.
A certified Scrum Master and Product Owner, Mr. Osei-Bonsu is also a long-standing member of IEEE, ACM, and the IEEE Computer Society. Fluent in English, Twi, and German, he brings a rich blend of cultural depth, technical expertise, and leadership experience to his new traditional role.
The KNUST community celebrates this proud moment and extends heartfelt congratulations to Mr. Leslie Nkansa Osei-Bonsu on his nomination as Mamponghene, confident that his leadership will uphold the legacy of excellence both in Asanteman and beyond.
